who is Miss Hickory?
First published in 1946, Miss Hickory by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey won the Newbery Medal of Excellence in American children's literature in 1947. Since that time, Miss Hickory has been a popular children's book enjoyed by generations of children.

The book details the adventures of a small doll named Miss Hickory constructed of a hickory nut head with an applewood body by her young owner. Miss Hickory was left behind in a corncob dollhouse near the family home when her owner's family decided to spend that winter in Boston. She is forced to fend for herself at first, but slowly learns to trust and depend on the farm and forest animals nearby. Some of the adventures don't fit the storyline properly, but the surprising ending when spring comes is strangely hopeful.

Note: The first edition of Miss Hickory (hardcover with dust jacket) is illustrated, but no colour plates are included.

How to make a Miss Hickory doll

Miss Hickory dolls, like any other nut head dolls, are easily to make at home by drilling a hole into the bottom of a nut shell, and gluing it to a wire body. Wrap the body in thread or cloth, and dress as desired. "Local" materials such as leaves and dried flower petals are good choices for clothing. Smaller size Miss Hickory dolls can be made with hazelnut shells or cherry pits.

If you prefer a fully-wooden articulated body, try to find an artist to carve one for you -- or try your hand at carving a body yourself.

Miss Hickory Miss Hickory is the heroine of the 1946 book Miss Hickory by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. This book won the 1947 Newbery Medal of Excellence in American children's literature. It is a delightful if slightly disjointed book about a doll with a hickory nut head and apple wood body. Some of the adventures don't fit the storyline properly, but the surprising ending when spring comes is strangely hopeful.
